Our goals are ambitious. You can help us get there.

Access and Affordability

Campaign Goal: $15 million

Access and Affordability is our central campaign priority where we seek to drive focused investment to the endowment so that we can better serve our students by securing access to a NOLS education.

For over fifty years, we’ve built NOLS into the world-class institution we are today, and it’s time to bring our life-changing experiences to a wider audience. This campaign will strengthen and extend our mission, making a NOLS experience more accessible and more affordable in order to educate the leaders of tomorrow—students as diverse as the world and as broad as the wilderness.

We are proud to work with a variety of national and local organizations to give underserved and underrepresented youth the tools they need to thrive in their academic and professional pursuits. By increasing scholarship funding, we are able to expose more people to the wilderness through full and partial assistance.

Additionally, the NOLS Fellowship Program provides people of color with employment and education opportunities to learn skills that are transferable to any career path. Fellows become ambassadors of the school and role models who can share their experience, inspiring more people of color to connect with the outdoors.

Through a $15 million investment in the endowment we can ensure that strategic priorities like these are not left to chance, securing access to a NOLS education for generations to come.

Immediate Support

Campaign Goal: $10 million

Over the past 10 years, NOLS has seen remarkable student growth. We rely on unrestricted support to minimize tuition increases as we invest in what makes us the leaders in wilderness education. Unrestricted philanthropic gifts instantly and directly affect our students, instructors, programs, curriculum, and research.

During the Step Forward Campaign, NOLS will raise at least $10 million through the NOLS annual fund. These funds are critical to meeting the school’s immediate and most pressing needs. By making an unrestricted donation to NOLS, you are building a school that keeps up with growing student demands, ensuring we remain relevant for future generations.

Sustainability for a Changing World

Campaign Goal: $3 million

By 2020, NOLS expects to reduce its carbon emissions by 30 percent. By upgrading and renovating our physical assets, we can significantly reduce our energy consumption, increasing efficiency and reinforcing our commitment to conservation. With your support, we can meet that goal.

While seven of our locations use alternative power sources—two are fully solar powered—other opportunities exist for NOLS to reduce the carbon footprint at our facilities. Solar panels, wind turbines, and geothermal systems are visible examples of our dedication to sustainability. They also serve as educational resources for our students, faculty, and the communities in which we operate. We invest in efficiencies when we can because the greatest resource savings come from those that aren’t used in the first place.

Projects such as these require immediate and long-term support. NOLS plans to raise $3 million dollars, endowing a minimum of $1 million into a green fund. By making a gift to sustainability at NOLS, your investment will create resources for future opportunities in green technology. If you want to learn more about how NOLS is reducing its carbon footprint and how your gift can help, watch this interactive presentation.

Campus Improvements

Campaign Goal: $2 million

The wilderness is at the heart of who we are and what we do. But our physical locations have been vital to facilitate every student’s experience, and today the majority of our students learn wilderness medicine skills for life inside classrooms.

As we’ve expanded to 16 locations across seven countries, and NOLS Wilderness Medicine continues to grow, our need for additional infrastructure has also increased. And providing ways to maintain the assets we already own is imperative.

Through capital improvements, we’ll be poised to meet our growing demand and continue leading the industry through the next fifty years.
